The Reality of Life for Working Donkeys in Ethiopia
"Every once in awhile life allows you to experience an incredible journey. My friend Dr. Alex Wales and I just completed such a journey.
“At the invitation of Jennifer Crooks, founder of the Uryadis Village orphanage in Sodo Ethiopia, we were able to help initiate what we hope will be a sustainable donkey project in this region of Ethiopia. We not only were able to worm, vaccinate and treat over a hundred donkeys, we were able to teach 14 final year veterinary students and professors some practical skills on the clinical examination of donkeys. To say that the people and donkeys of Ethiopia have a hard life would be an understatement. For numerous reasons there is little regard for the donkeys’ health and welfare. We were able to link the Donkey Sanctuary from Britain, the Sodo Veterinary school, Department of Agriculture and the Uryadis Village orphanage and successfully initiated the first community outreach for donkeys in the area.”
